Food Safety

Hey guys, Today’s post will be about food safety. I found some useful tips on preparing food, handling food and serving food. 1       Wash your hands. Remember to wash with warm soapy water for at least 20 seconds, before and after handling food, before feeding infants and children’s, and before and after changing nappies.        Wash eating areas with warm and soapy water. This includes tables, benches, plates, bowls, cups and cutlery.   Always watch infants and children when they are eating.        Avoid feeding children under 5 years old, food that is small, round or hard. This can include hotdogs, whole grapes, lollies, popcorn, nuts, carrots, apple chunks, and gum.        Keep dishwashing detergent and soap, away from little kids, to avoid accidental poisoning,        Ask the parents for specific instruction on how to safely prepare baby bottles and food. ...

Answering the phone

Hey guys, Today I will be posting about what to do if the phone rings. You should always discus the parent’s rules before they leave. Some parents may prefer to let the phone record any messages, this will free you up to keep a watchful eye on the kids. However if you do answer the phone, follow these simple safety guidelines. ·          Keep a list of important phone numbers handy to save precious minutes in the event of any emergency. ·          Never identify yourself by name or as the babysitter. ·          Never tell the call that the parent aren’t home. Inform the caller that they can’t come to the phone, but you can take a message. Record a name and a contact number and give ot the parents when they get home. ·          If the caller becomes persistent or abusive, or makes you feel uncomfortable or suspicious,...

How to settle a baby!

Hey guys When I babysitting babies, I often find that they cry as soon as the parents have walked out of the door. Sometimes rocking them or singing to them won’t work so here are some tips and tricks to try when a baby is crying out of control: 99% of the time it is not you who is the cause. When a baby cries like that it is called separation anxiety. Don’t worry about it. ·          Show them pictures of their mum and dad- seeing their faces might reassure them. ·          Read them a story ·          Tickle their feet or hands. ·          If you are happy- laughing and talking positively, then the baby might follow you actions. ·          Give them something to eat or drink. ·          Get out some building blocks or a teddy and play...

Instructions and Routines

Hey guys, Today’s post will be about instructions and rules. When I am babysitting, usually there is instructions to follow. The mum might leave me a note saying what to feed the kids, bedtime, TV rules and other important info. I know, when you first start to look after that family you will get the initial information, but sometimes the rules might be changed slightly. If you are babysitting on a school night, little Charlie might have to go to bed at 7:30, but if it is a Friday or Saturday night, the rules might be changed. Charlie can go to bed at 9:30 with half an hour of TV. Some rules I have been given include: 1 Only feed the kids half the bag of wedges and they can have two nuggets each. 2 Half an hour on technology. 3 Bedtime no later than 10. You kind of get where I am going with this. I am sure there are many other instructions and rules that parents have left for you. When they leave instructions written down, I usually keep them in a binder folder, and the...

Babysitting Qualities

Hey guys, If you are wanting to start babysitting then the following list of qualities are what parents are looking for when they are hiring you as a babysitter or a nanny for your kids. Whether you are babysitting on a regular basis or on an occasional basis, parents are still looking for these qualities when hiring you as a babysitter. Here we go: Responsibility- Parents expect you to be a responsible person because you are looking after their kids without them around. You are a supervisor and the parents expect that when they come home, everything should be running smoothly. Even if something bad happens, parents expect you to tell them. Reporting mistakes or incidents will help you get more babysitting jobs because they will recommend you and say that you are honest- which is another quality.  Good overall health- If you have a cold or other contagious disease do not accept a babysitting job, you do not want to infect the children because younger kids have a lower ...

How much to charge!

Hey, guys, this post will be about how much to charge when babysitting. So here are some pointers to help make it easier for you. The going rate for babysitting depends on a few factors but as a general rule $3 to $5 per hour is a good starting point. The things you should consider when setting a rate include; ·          The number of kids you’ll be caring for, more kids should mean a higher hourly fee. ·          The time of day you’ll be caring for the kids, if it’s a daytime thing your rate should be a bit higher as you’ll likely be expected to entertain the children, at night it’s likely the kids will spend the bulk of their time in bed so your hourly fee should go down. If you’re needed overnight you may even want to consider offering a flat rate. ·          The ages of the children, babies, and toddlers require much more work than older children and nee...

Sorry!

Hey guys, I am sorry for not posting for a while, I have been really busy with school. I am going to do a post every day for the next week. I have so many ideas to share with you guys. Some posts are about: soothing a crying baby, babysitting bag ideas, how much to charge, cute food ideas and more. So today’s post will be about Babysitting bags/Magic Bags. I love the idea of a Magic bag, because if the kids are being naughty, you can say, “If you are good, you can choose one thing from my bag.” Or the other way around. If they are being nice to one another or helping you, tell them that they can pick a book, DVDs or a small treat, etc.… In my next post, I will be posting heaps of other ideas to include 1.        DVDs -- if you're babysitting at night, the kids are sometimes cranky from a long day and too tired to really do any activities. If you bring your own DVDs, they will have a much better time because they haven't seen the movie a million time...

How to start a babysitting business!

Hello everyone, today I will be sharing some tips and ideas to help you start your own babysitting business! Step 1 Get permision from your parents.  This is most important, before you begin other steps! They may want to talk to you about the responsibilities and consequences first, or they may have concerns about your age and preparedness to care for someone else. Step 2  Gather references and recommendations.  Start out by encouraging your parents, friends, relatives and acquaintances to recommend you to anyone they know who needs a babysitter. Step 3  Take a babysitting course.  Red Cross is recommended, but really any well known course will do. Choose a course that is helpful and informative, and many parents will feel better about leaving their kids with you. Step 4  Choose a name for your business.  You can also create some business cards (preferably typed up - that makes it look more professional!) to hand out to people. Step...
